What Is Section 179?

Section 179 is part of the US Tax Code, designed to help stimulate the economy. It encourages business owners to purchase equipment by allowing companies to deduct up to 100% of the purchase in a single year, instead of spreading it out over several years. It works for new or used equipment, and for equipment you finance.

The Tax Savings Can Be Big

Here’s a simple example.

  1. You buy equipment

Your company buys $150,000 of revenue producing equipment from Contractors Services before the end of the year.

  2. You deduct it

With $150,000 of taxable income, you deduct the purchase and fully offset your tax bill.

  3. You save $31,500

If your tax rate is 21%, that reduces your tax liability by $31,500 for the year.

If you don’t want to use all 100% of the equipment purchase, you can carry a portion over and use it in future years.

What About Section 179 for Next Year?

Section 179 is here to stay. Congress made it permanent in 2015, and in 2025 it raised the limit to $2,500,000 and tied it to inflation, which is why the 2026 limit is $2,560,000. That lets you take advantage of the benefit each year and keep more money in your pocket to help your business grow.

Your deduction can’t be more than your taxable business income, and anything over carries forward to future years. Some states, including California, set their own Section 179 limits. This page is general information and not tax advice.
